Bulk Trash & Yard Waste Collection
Bulk Trash
Bulk Trash is collected by the Town Public Works department as needed. Items can be placed by the curb at any time during the week (no weekend pickups) to be collected. Please limit to one collection per month, when possible. If items are at the curb for more than 48 hours after being placed, please contact Town Hall to make us aware. We can be contacted by phone at 410-287-6173, ext. 1, by email at staff@charlestownmd.org, or by using the Bulk Trash Collection form on this page.
Bulk items must meet the following criteria:
- OKAY for collection:
- furniture, appliances (refrigerator doors must be removed or taped shut), mattresses & box springs, toys, (2) two tires (without rims) per collection day, and carpet (must be cut into pieces no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet.
- NOT OKAY for collection:
- Construction debris (drywall, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, etc.), medical waste, propane tanks, car parts, and chemicals. These can be taken to the Cecil County Landfill.
- To schedule a pickup for more than four (4) large items, contact Town Hall 48 hours in advance. Limited to three (3) truckloads, and $150 per truckload. Payment is due upon scheduling. Please note, this service is not available for evictions; landlords are responsible for taking items to the Cecil County Landfill.
Household Hazardous Waste
The Cecil County Landfill has special days in April and October for household hazardous waste items that are not normally taken for collection. Please visit their website by clicking here for more information.
Yard Waste
Yard Waste will be picked up by Town Public Works staff beginning at 7am on the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Mondays of the month, or on Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday. It is not necessary to make an appointment for yard waste to be collected, but if you have any questions, please contact Town Hall at (410) 287-6173 or via email at staff@charlestownmd.org.
Yard waste must meet the following criteria:
- All yard waste must be placed outside by 7am on the scheduled pickup day, but should not be placed outside more than 24-48 hours prior.
- Trash bags will NOT be collected as they are not accepted at the landfill; use paper bags instead.
- If using a trash can to hold yard waste, the can must have a lid and limited in size to 32 gallons. A lid keeps rain water out on rainy days, thus keeping the cans from becoming too heavy to pick up.
- Christmas trees are collected on the first and third Tuesdays of January and must be set aside from regular yard waste.
- OKAY for collection:
- Grass clippings and leaves must be contained in paper bags or 32-gallon cans with lids.
- Branches, small limbs, vines, etc., must be cut into pieces not to exceed (4) four feet in length or larger than (3) inches in diameter. They do not need to be in a paper bag; bundles are okay.
- NOT OKAY for collection:
- Trash mixed with yard waste
- Paper bags or containers that weigh more than 50lbs
- Yard waste wrapped in a tarp
- Yard waste in trash bags
