Charlestown 2010 Census Challenge

Help Charlestown get the highest participation percentage of all cities and towns in the Nation.  We will track and post how we are doing each week right here.  We would like to challenge all Charlestown residents to return their census forms.  A U.S. Census Representative will be available March 1 through April 16, 2010 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays here in Town Hall from 9:30AM to 1:30PM should you have any questions or need help filling out your 2010 Census Form.

Participation Percentage to date:  0%

In 2000 the annual participation average was 72%.  Charlestown was in the 63-68% average range.

  • The Town Maintenance staff will soon begin the first phase of a project to correct the storm water issues around the Town Hall, Post Office, Playground and Conestoga Street.  The first phase of the project should improve the standing water situation in the Conestoga Street area.  This long-awaited project will require some of the work to be performed by outside contractors when the phase 2 portion of the project is begun later this year.  We were hopeful that Federal Stimulus money might have been available so the entire project could have been done by an outside contractor, but the Town was not successful in our attempts to obtain funding.  The Town does not have the equipment to excavate at the required depth which is necessary for this project to be successful when completed.

  • Prescription cards from the National League of Cities are now available at Town Hall. This is NOT an insurance card but a DISCOUNT card. Many of the stores in our area welcome these cards which will entitle the buyer to a 15-30 percent discount depending on the type of prescription. One card is good for the entire family.

  • June Charlestown Chatter

  • The Town of Charlestown now accepts Master Charge, Visa, Discover, American Express and Debit. A $5.00 service fee will be charged per transaction.

Cecil Hotel Restoration Project

The Cecil Hotel, located at the corner of Caroline and Bladen Streets was, as most of you know, purchased by the Town of Charlestown last year to prevent this historic structure, built in 1809, from being removed from the Town.  We have lost historic buildings in the past.  This is a difficult renovation project in these current economic times, as grant money to repair the structure is very difficult to obtain.  We do have a very enthusiastic group of individuals, however, having experience in many facets of restoration and construction, contributing their time to assist in the process.  We are hopeful that grant money will be more readily available next year to enable the Town to continue the renovation project.
